Neha met Sandeep Unnikrishnan at the school in Bangalore, where they dated for fourteen years. Later, they both got married in 2008. However, Sandeep died on November 28, 2008.

On 26 November 2008, a group of ten terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba, invaded Mumbai’s several buildings including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, and Nariman House. In those buildings, the terrorists held many hostages. The Indian Army gave Sandeep the charge of ‘team commander’ of the 51 SAG. He has to rescue hostages from Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Sandeep along with his ten commandos, evacuated the hostages on the fifth and sixth floor. He detected the presence of terrorists on 4th floor. Unnikrishnan and his team broke into the room, but the terrorists managed to escape the room after blasting a grenade inside the room. For around the next 15 hours, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and his team continued evacuating hostages from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

That day, he managed to rescue fourteen hostages. In the process, he was shot in his right arm. Despite of being injured, he continued to fight the terrorists till his last breath. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan displayed most amazing bravery and leadership and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
